OpenDNS Announces April 2009 PhishTank Findings, IRS Appears Among Top Targets for the Month
IRS, PayPal, eBay Round Out Top Three Targets Used in Phishing Scams Caught by PhishTank in April
May 1, 2009 — SAN FRANCISCO -- OpenDNS (www.opendns.com), provider of the award-winning navigation service that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced April 2009 statistics for PhishTank.com, the free community Web site where anyone can submit, verify, track and share phishing data. During the month of April, the PhishTank community voted more than 58,000 times on more than 16,000 suspected phishes. In addition to eBay and PayPal, which routinely appear in the list of the top most spoofed brands, last month's PhishTank list also included the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, likely due to the tax due date of April 15. OpenDNS is the world's largest, fastest-growing DNS service. PhishTank is the only consumer-friendly, anti-phishing effort that publicly shares timely phishing data.

Total number of votes by the PhishTank community: 58,269
Total number of unique, suspected phishing scams reported: 16,369
Country hosting the most phishing sites: United States

About PhishTank
PhishTank is operated by OpenDNS and is the first and only effort of its kind. Launched in October 2006 to coincide with National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the site employs a sophisticated voting system that requires the community to vote "phish" or "not phish," reducing the possibility of false positives and improving the overall breadth and coverage of the phishing data. PhishTank makes all phishing data it accumulates public and available via programmable APIs, which allow other software developers to incorporate the anti-phishing data into their tools. The open access is intended to encourage the sharing of information and increase the chance of eliminating phishing all together. For more information about PhishTank, please visit: www.phishtank.com
