Specialized Bicycles Switches to OpenDNS to Filter Unsafe Content, Provide Faster and More Reliable Internet to its Employees

Leading Cycling Company Rolls Out OpenDNS at CA Headquarters, With Plans to Expand to Other U.S. Locations in 2009

May 8, 2009 — San Francisco -- OpenDNS, provider of the award-winning service that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced Specialized Bicycles has switched to OpenDNS to ensure an overall better Internet experience for its employees and eliminate problems caused by using its local ISP's DNS. OpenDNS has provided Specialized 100 percent DNS uptime since the company made the switch.

"I choose OpenDNS because it is simple, fast, and it just works," said Ray Dzek, Network Operations for Specialized Bicycles. "I have our filtering settings on low to filter some of the Internet's dark side. And I like the CacheCheck feature as we're a dynamic environment, re-organizing many of our sites and domain names regularly. CacheCheck gives me insight into DNS caches that I've never before had."

Specialized made the decision to move to OpenDNS after fiber-optic cable cuts took down Internet connectivity, and consequentially DNS, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company couldn't afford its entire headquarters workforce to be offline, with its productivity potential hindered.

"The cable cuts took our network down for about 18 hours. That was pretty much the 'tipping point' for the decision to use OpenDNS," said Dzek. "Our DNS was through our local ISP, but because we switched to OpenDNS, we came up almost four hours before they did."
