PayPal, Banking Sites Dominate Most Frequently Spoofed List
Sep 9, 2010 — SAN FRANCISCO - OpenDNS, provider of the world's leading Internet navigation and security services that make networks safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced August 2010 statistics for PhishTank.com, the free community Web site where anyone can submit, verify, track and share phishing data. During the month of August, the PhishTank community voted nearly 57,000 times on almost 15,000 suspected phishes.
Included among the top most spoofed brands this month is PayPal, with 7,652 valid phishes. Other frequently spoofed brands include banking sites HSBC, Bradesco and JPMorgan Chase, gaming site World of Warcraft and social networking site Facebook.
OpenDNS is the world's largest, fastest-growing DNS service. PhishTank is the only consumer-friendly, anti-phishing effort that publicly shares timely phishing data.
Highlights from the August 2010 PhishTank statistics include:
Total number of votes by the PhishTank community: 56,090
Total number of unique, suspected phishing scams reported: 14,679
Country hosting the most phishing sites: United States
Percentage of phishing sites hosted in United States: 50
Median time it took for the PhishTank community to verify phishes: 4 hours, 27minutes
