OpenDNS Gives Telecom Providers a Way to Stop Unknowingly Hosting Phishes
New PhishTank ASN and Brand Search Functions Let Organizations Learn About and Stop Phishes Hosted on their Network
Oct 9, 2007 — San Francisco -- OpenDNS, the award-winning DNS provider that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced it is empowering telecom providers and other organizations to search PhishTank for phishes hosted locally on their network and easily disable them.
Operated by OpenDNS, PhishTank is the only collaborative clearinghouse of phishing data, openly sharing timely phishing information with Yahoo! Mail, the Mozilla Foundation and other software developers looking to incorporate anti-phishing elements in their tools. OpenDNS is the world's largest, fastest-growing DNS provider.
The new PhishTank ASN (Autonomous System Number) search, which is also available from an RSS feed, will allow organizations to be alerted in real time to new phishing scams utilizing their resources and take corrective action sooner. An ASN is assigned to every network on the Internet, making the network uniquely identifiable. The new PhishTank brand search will allow anyone to search directly on PhishTank.com and see a list of recent and archived phishes spoofing that brand.
This new functionality holds the potential to significantly decrease phishing and its resulting identity theft in the United States and worldwide.
According to the PhishTank Annual Report, also released today, U.S. telecom providers lead the world in number of phishing sites hosted on their network(s). Looking at more than 300,000 unique suspected phishing scams submitted to PhishTank over the course of twelve months, the report concluded the United States hosted more phishes than any other country in the world eleven of the twelve months evaluated. Of the U.S. hosting providers topping the list, SBC, Comcast and Road Runner were numbers one, two and three, respectively.
Also according to the PhishTank annual report, phishing is increasingly becoming a more serious problem. The report found that approximately one unique phishing scam launches every two minutes.
About PhishTank:
Launched in October 2006 to coincide with National Cyber Security Awareness Month, PhishTank is the world's only collaborative clearinghouse for phishing data. PhishTank employs a sophisticated voting system that requires the community to vote "phish" or "not phish," reducing the possibility of false positives and improving the data's overall breadth and coverage. PhishTank makes all phishing data it accumulates public and available via programmable APIs, which allow other software developers to incorporate anti-phishing elements into their tools. The open access is intended to encourage the sharing of information and increase the chance of eliminating phishing all together. For more information about PhishTank, please visit: www.phishtank.com
