Sioux City School District Switches to OpenDNS

Complaints about Web speed "go away" after rolling out OpenDNS network-wide

Jan 30, 2008 — SAN FRANCISCO - OpenDNS, the award-winning DNS service that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced Sioux City Community School District in the state of Iowa has switched to OpenDNS from the DNS service it previously got from its ISP. With more than fourteen thousand students and fifteen hundred full-time staff, Sioux City Community School District is one of the largest districts in the state of Iowa. Now providing DNS service to more than 3 million Internet users worldwide, OpenDNS is the world's largest, fastest-growing DNS service.

Network administrators at the District were bogged down with complaints about slow Web speeds, and easily traced the issues to faulty DNS. When searching for a more reliable DNS service, they also took into account the need for a more secure Web content filtering solution. Though the District had a pre-existing filtering tool in place, Web security is their No. 1 priority and they sought to add an additional layer of protection.

After hearing about OpenDNS from a well-respected technology expert, Systems Administrator Ted Katseres decided to give the service a try. In the testing process, he quickly noticed Web speeds were as much as three-times faster than before.

"OpenDNS has been an excellent tool for our District," said Katseres. "From an IT perspective, complaints about Web speed have gone away and we can rest assured knowing we have an additional layer of filtering and protection for students and staff."
