Campbell University Switches to OpenDNS from Websense and SurfControl
School Finds OpenDNS Far Superior to Pricy Filtering Solutions
Apr 2, 2008 — San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) -- OpenDNS, the award-winning DNS provider that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable today announced Campbell University has switched to OpenDNS for all Web content filtering from its previous solution including both Websense and SurfControl. Campbell University, founded in 1887, is a liberal arts, sciences and professions undergraduate and graduate university in North Carolina. OpenDNS is the world's largest, fastest-growing DNS provider.
Campbell University network administrator Mattison Ward is tasked with keeping his network up and running, and safe and secure. Like other network administrators Ward needs to restrict access to inappropriate content and Peer-to-Peer file sharing sites that consume too much bandwidth and slow down network speeds, not to mention act as malware vectors. His pre-existing filtering solution, including SurfControl on the network of the main campus and Websense on the networks of remote campuses, proved flaky and unreliable. The combination of poor performance, complicated setup and interface and hefty price tag prompted Ward to look for an alternative solution.
To test OpenDNS Ward first tried OpenDNS on remote campus networks. After deeming the test a success, he set the Campbell University computer lab DNS servers to forward requests to OpenDNS and subsequently all other DNS servers to forward requests. At current over 3000 Campbell University residential students and staff are surfing safer, faster, smarter and more reliably with OpenDNS.
"Websense was very expensive, complicated, and failed easily. The SurfControl pornography category had many false positives," said Ward. "OpenDNS is extremely reliable, provides highly accurate categories and is very easy to use. It also provides a great experience to the network administrator and end user. I recommend OpenDNS."
