City of Nashville Selects OpenDNS as Filtering Solution for Free Wi-Fi
City government of the largest metropolitan area in the state of Tennessee chooses OpenDNS for public Wi-Fi.
Jul 21, 2008 — SAN FRANCISCO - OpenDNS, the award-winning navigation service that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County has chosen OpenDNS for free Wi-Fi services available at various city-owned sites. Popularly known as Metro Nashville, the government body is ranked fourth in Digital Cities Survey 2007. OpenDNS is the world’s-largest, fastest-growing DNS service.
At the cutting edge of technology, Metro Nashville has provided its residents with free Wi-Fi at several locations. Since more than 600,000 Nashville-Davidson County residents and visitors have access to the free network at several wireless hotspots, Internet security is a main concern for the city government. In fact, providing improved data security and reliability with priority given to public safety is one of the strategic goals of the Information Technology Services of the Metro Nashville Government. This is why administrators chose OpenDNS over other free services as a solution for network security and reliability for Metro Nashville’s citizens.
OpenDNS also ensures that Metro Nashville provides public Internet access that is compliant with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Using Web-content filtering tools, the city government can be sure that wireless access follows this Federal Law that limits access to offensive content over the Internet.
“OpenDNS provides the service that we need at no additional cost to our citizens,” said Allan Que, Network Security Advisor at Metro Government of Nashville. “As a government entity, we continually strive to reduce costs and expect OpenDNS to save Nashville a significant amount on security efforts.”
In addition, he was interested in OpenDNS’s industry-leading phishing protection, which keeps Nashville Internet users safe from fraudulent Web sites.
“As phishing threats constantly evolve, community-supported phishing protection through OpenDNS-operated PhishTank shields our users from some of the latest attacks,” he continued.
At the forefront of technological advancement, the Metro Nashville city government is making sure they are protected at no cost to residents. With OpenDNS, Metro Nashville is achieving its goal of improving security and reliability for its citizens while simultaneously lowering government expenses.
“Our experience with OpenDNS has been great,” said Que. “I would certainly recommend OpenDNS to other municipalities offering free Wi-Fi and looking to deploy Web filtering and phishing protections at a minimal cost.”
