The leading beauty supplies and services boutique selected OpenDNS Enterprise to ensure sensitive customer data couldn’t be breached and its acceptable use policies could be easily enforced across all retail locations.
OpenDNS, the world’s largest Internet-wide security network – making the Internet safer, faster and more reliable for more than 50 million people every day – today announced that Planet Beauty is using OpenDNS Enterprise, the leading choice in Internet security for retailers across the globe. Planet Beauty, a chain of glamorous boutique beauty stores, is using OpenDNS to proactively block malware, centralize security management and enforce an acceptable use policy at 32 locations.
Prior to deploying OpenDNS Enterprise, Planet Beauty’s IT team was looking to solve two main issues. First, the team needed a way to easily deploy and manage a Web filtering program for all Planet Beauty stores so they could enforce an acceptable use policy, but they didn’t want to deploy appliances to individual sites. Second, the organization required an additional layer of security on its corporate network that would allow it to proactively block access to known malicious sites and eliminate botnet communications.
“Our retail stores handle private customer information, so Internet security is a top priority,” said Leo Salazar, IT Assistant for Planet Beauty. “In order to ensure that sensitive customer data is kept private, it’s essential that our malware protection program is airtight.”
Planet Beauty selected OpenDNS Enterprise because the cloud-based service can proactively prevent malware downloads by blocking access to known malicious sites. This ensures that the Planet Beauty IT team will spend less time hunting down and cleaning up malware infections after the network has already been compromised. Additionally, Planet Beauty found OpenDNS Enterprise to be the ideal Web filtering solution for its individual retail locations because there is no appliance to deploy and all sites can be managed remotely.
“We evaluated multiple services, including Norton, SonicWALL and DNSAdvantage, but each of those options would either force us into managing appliances or limit the level of control we have over management for our individual sites,” explained Salazar. “OpenDNS Enterprise allowed us to quickly and easily deploy Internet security and Web filtering services to 32 locations, and we get the same features offered by appliances without the big headache.”
With OpenDNS Enterprise, Salazar and his team can now manage all networks remotely through a centralized Dashboard. As Planet Beauty grows, its IT team can easily copy over settings and turn up a new location in a matter of minutes, whereas hardware-based solutions would take weeks or even months for the same process.
In addition to the remote management features, OpenDNS Enterprise gives Planet Beauty’s IT team additional flexibility through Block Page Bypass, a feature that allows designated administrators to override filtering settings through the use of a specified code.
“It’s important that we can still empower our staff to find resources they or the customers might need,” said Salazar. “If a store manager needs to access a vendor site we can simply give them an access code to open up the network, and add an expiration date so we don’t have to worry about them forgetting to close it back down. As a network administrator this is significantly easier than remotely logging in and disabling security features, as would be the case with other solutions.”
Salazar concluded: “We would definitely recommend OpenDNS Enterprise to other retail organizations. It’s cost effective and it gives us significantly improved flexibility, all without the headache of managing appliances for 32 sites and counting.
OpenDNS is the world’s leading provider of Internet security and DNS services, enabling the world to connect to the Internet with confidence on any device, anywhere, anytime. OpenDNS provides millions of businesses, schools and households with a safer, faster and more intelligent Internet experience by protecting them from malicious Web threats and providing them control over how users navigate the Internet, while dramatically increasing the network’s overall performance and reliability.
