Managing Advanced OpenDNS Settings
This section explains how to use the OpenDNS features found under the Advanced Settings section of the OpenDNS Dashboard.
OpenDNS SmartCache improves response times for routine DNS lookups, and also enables access to websites for which the authoritative nameserver is not responding.
When an authoritative nameserver outage occurs, the websites whose domain names are resolved by those servers will not be available to most Internet users. However, Internet users who navigate the Internet with OpenDNS will be able to reach those websites because of SmartCache.
SmartCache utilizes our global network of DNS servers and our large DNS cache to find the last known correct address for a website. This aspect of SmartCache renders authoritative DNS outages irrelevant for OpenDNS end-users.
SmartCache is automatically enabled for all users.
OpenDNS provides a smarter Internet by automatically correcting mistyped domain addresses. For example, when an end-user types www.craigslist.og, OpenDNS quickly corrects the mistype and loads the likely intended page: www.craigslist.org.
The Domain Typo Correction setting also enables VPN exceptions, which allows end-users who are using a VPN connection to reach internal resources in their office. OpenDNS Administrators can add corporate domain addresses to the VPN Exception list in the OpenDNS Dashboard. To do so, select the network from Settings for: and click on the Advanced Settings link. In the Domain Typos section, specify VPN domains under Exceptions for VPN Users. Be sure to Apply any changes made.
OpenDNS Administrators who enable Domain Typo Correction have the option to enable the feature that converts a domain name entered with a .cm to a .com. To do so, log in to the OpenDNS Dashboard, Select the network from Settings for: and click on the Advanced Settings link. Select Enable filtering of .cm wildcard and Apply your changes.
Note: Registered .cm domains such as for Cameroon will not be corrected to .com.
