Enabling Data Collection

To enable data collection for a network, log in to the Dashboard and go to the Settings tab. Under Settings for:, select the network to be modified, choose Stats and Logs, select the Enable option and click Apply.

Once data is being collected, a report can be created for an individual network or as a summary for all networks in an organization. The DNS data points described in the following table can be charted across a range of dates or for just a single day.

DNS Lookup Data Points Description
Total Requests Graphs or tabulates the SUM of all DNS requests made from a network over time.
Total Unique Domains Graphs or tabulates the COUNT of only unique domains requested from a network.
Unique IP Addresses Counts the number of IP addresses making DNS requests from within a network. A /32 is 1 IP address; a /24 can be up to 256 possible IP addresses within the network.
Top Domains Lists the most requested-for domains on the network and SUMs the requests to those domains. Allows administrators to analyze traffic to external websites.
Blocked Domains Provides a list of the domains attempted to be reached, but blocked due to filtering. The reason for the block is also explained.
Request Types Lists the type and number of domain resolutions made on the network. Types include A, MX, PTR. For type definitions, follow this link.
Bypass Logs
(OpenDNS Enterprise Only)
A detailed list of which users bypassed what domain or category and at what time.
