Enabling Data Collection
To enable data collection for a network, log in to the Dashboard and go to the Settings tab. Under Settings for:, select the network to be modified, choose Stats and Logs, select the Enable option and click Apply.
Once data is being collected, a report can be created for an individual network or as a summary for all networks in an organization. The DNS data points described in the following table can be charted across a range of dates or for just a single day.
| DNS Lookup Data Points | Description |
|---|---|
| Total Requests | Graphs or tabulates the SUM of all DNS requests made from a network over time. |
| Total Unique Domains | Graphs or tabulates the COUNT of only unique domains requested from a network. |
| Unique IP Addresses | Counts the number of IP addresses making DNS requests from within a network. A /32 is 1 IP address; a /24 can be up to 256 possible IP addresses within the network. |
| Top Domains | Lists the most requested-for domains on the network and SUMs the requests to those domains. Allows administrators to analyze traffic to external websites. |
| Blocked Domains | Provides a list of the domains attempted to be reached, but blocked due to filtering. The reason for the block is also explained. |
| Request Types | Lists the type and number of domain resolutions made on the network. Types include A, MX, PTR. For type definitions, follow this link. |
| Bypass Logs (OpenDNS Enterprise Only) | A detailed list of which users bypassed what domain or category and at what time. |
